P5/6 Learning Highlights – A Fantastic Start to the Year!
What an exciting and enriching half term it has been in our P5/6 classroom! Our pupils have embraced a wide range of learning experiences with enthusiasm, creativity, and curiosity.
We explored the wonders of Ancient Egypt by building pyramids and identifying the features of a square-based pyramid using nets, flaps, faces, surface area, and perimeter. Pupils also enjoyed playing the "Life on the Nile" board game, which brought history to life in a fun and interactive way. To extend this learning, we ventured into Minecraft, where P5 pupils wrote a recount of their virtual exploration, and P6 pupils created instructional writing on how to log in and access the program.
In literacy, we practiced alphabetical order, even including Egyptian vocabulary, and listened to fascinating stories from two pupils who shared their experiences from a summer trip to South Africa—a wonderful way to connect learning with real-world adventures!
Our visit to the Poyntzpass Community Centre was a highlight, where pupils showcased their own artwork and explored how the village looked in the past. This hands-on experience helped deepen their understanding of local history and community.
Maths has been full of energy and challenge! Pupils played place value games up to thousands and tens of thousands, built their times tables knowledge, and even tackled multiplying with decimal places—reaching elite levels of understanding! At home, they extended their learning by completing adventure quests, measuring lines in metres, centimetres, and millimetres, and engaging in shape-building activities. We also built 3D shapes both in school and at home, and during Maths Week (13–17 October), pupils collaborated with Primary 2 and 3 on fun maths activities, strengthening teamwork and problem-solving skills.
We also took time to nurture wellbeing through mindfulness artwork and created beautiful seasonal trees that now brighten our classroom. In drama, we explored the magical world of pantomime, identifying its key features and bringing characters to life through performance. To finish the term, we celebrated with a Halloween parade in the Parish Hall, dancing and having fun to “I Put a Spell on You”.
We even added a creative twist to our lessons by using Pokémon cards for making numeracy lessons engaging and imaginative for everyone.
It’s been a joy to see our pupils grow in confidence, creativity, and collaboration. We’re so proud of all they’ve achieved and can’t wait to see what the next half term brings!
