Pantomime reviews from P6 and P7

18th Dec 2019

Our Pantomime, ‘Cinderella Rockerfella’ involved every child from Key Stage 2, all 89 of them! The children from Primary 7 and Primary 6 were awarded most of the main parts as it would be their last opportunity in primary school to star in a big show - auditions for the parts were so good it was hard to choose.

After all the hard work, and amazing performances, the older children were asked for their opinions of their experiences. If we ever wondered if it was worth all the hard graft, sweat and some tears, these opinions confirmed our best hopes:

I think that our school pantomime was a great experience. At the start I thought that learning a lot of lines would be easy enough but now I know otherwise! It’s not easy getting up in front of  everyone and saying lines because you think you look stupid but when it comes to the bit and you’re wearing your costume and the lights and sound are all set up it makes the whole thing easier.

I think the hardest part of the experience was getting expression into my voice because when I learned my lines, I read them silently in my head, but when we practised it got easier. At one stage we practised so much I almost wanted a numeracy lesson!

I really enjoyed doing the songs and going over them with Emma, that was fun. We learned loads doing the panto, like how to read a play script and how to speak in front of an audience, so it sorts of made up for all the lessons we missed doing rehearsals for the pantomime.

I guess they thought I was good because I got the part! It was really hard and I wanted to tell the teachers I was going to drop out… The next day I didn’t say anything, and I’m glad I didn’t, because I really enjoyed it a lot.

In our school pantomime I was the costume designer. At first I did not want to do it at all because I had to be flamboyant [though I did learn a new word - flamboyant]. I was so nervous about the pantomime because it was in 3 or 4 weeks. Despite the pantomime I didn’t even have a costume yet so that night me and my mum ordered feather boas because she said they were flamboyant. We also got a really fancy dress to go with the dress. I looked so flamboyant!

On the night of the pantomime I was not as nervous because every night me and my mum went into a different room to practise my lines and my acting and on the night before the pantomime I did my part in the pantomime in front of my family. They said it was great and that gave me an extra boost of courage.  I walked up on stage on the night of the pantomime. I actually  thought I was pretty good and the dance I was in [and all the other dances] were amazing.

I really enjoyed being in the pantomime, Cinderella Rockerfella. Sometimes, though, I dreaded doing the pantomime. I remember being at home practising, with my parents telling me to say my lines slowly and clearly, and in school the teachers getting cross because I wasn’t doing it right, or not walking in the right way. I found it really boring when I wasn’t on stage because there was nothing flat to lean on except for the floor, so I couldn’t do my Christmas booklet.

On the night I was really nervous because I was the first act, but when I started saying my lines all my nerves went away. I enjoyed every bit of it!! At some of the practice sessions the play was getting a bit tedious, but on Thursday night I loved watching it, to see if everything went smoothly. I’m so glad that everything went well, I can’t wait to do another play.
