Play Through the Ages

1st Apr 2019

Primary 6 children were invited to join a programme hosted by Playboard NI called Play Through the Ages, with the aim of encouraging children to engage with older members of the community and learn about games and toys from days gone by. The older residents of Poyntzpass kindly let us join their Wednesday Club, and along with our friends from Poyntzpass Primary School, we had four lovely afternoons chatting and learning from each other.

We swopped skipping rhymes; learned how to play 'two-ball' (a difficult skill to master it was agreed); and tried our hand at marbles and tiddly winks. Each session concluded with fruit and juice courtesy of the Wednesday Club. The best bits, our children concluded, included the opportunities they had to hear about childhood in the past and compare our lives. To our children's surprise, the older people almost unanimously felt their childhood gave them more freedom and fun than children enjoy nowadays.

Have a look at our pictures - who do you think is having most fun?

Our sincere thanks to Playboard NI, the Wednesday Club and  ABC Council for their support.
