STEM in Action: Catapult Engineering Challenge

14th May 2026
Today our class took part in an exciting, hands-on STEM engineering challenge, where the boys and girls worked collaboratively in groups to design, build and improve their own catapults. Throughout the lesson, pupils demonstrated excellent teamwork, sharing ideas and modelling their thinking to one another as they explored different ways to make their catapults more effective. They investigated how to increase distance by adapting their designs and experimented with both lighter and heavier objects to see how this impacted performance. As part of our learning, we explored key scientific concepts, including how forces such as friction and gravity affect movement, and how elastic potential energy is transferred into kinetic energy when the catapult is released. Pupils also learned about the historical use of catapults while developing a deeper understanding of the importance of testing, evaluating and improving designs. It was a highly engaging STEM lesson that encouraged creativity, problem-solving and resilience across all groups.
