World Around Us – Learning About Lough Neagh and Our Environment
23rd Mar 2026
Our pupils have been deeply engaged in their World Around Us topic this term, focusing on Lough Neagh and the impact of algae pollution on the environment. We also explored how this links to the themes in The Iron Woman, where pollution and its effects on creatures and habitats mirror the real‑life challenges facing our local environment.
As part of their learning, pupils worked in pairs to research key facts about Lough Neagh. They created bright and informative posters, which were then peer assessed by their classmates. This allowed them to learn from one another, celebrate great ideas, and think critically about how information is presented.
In addition, each pupil selected a creature that lives in, on, or near Lough Neagh. They researched their chosen creature, produced a hand‑drawn illustration, and presented their findings confidently to the class. The standard of work was excellent, and the pupils showed real enthusiasm for understanding the wildlife connected to our local area.
Our topic also included learning about Northern Ireland tourist destinations. Pupils investigated:
Which county each destination is in
How far it is from our school
Key facts and interesting features
Where it is located on a map
They finished by producing another wonderful hand drawing of their chosen tourist location before presenting their research to the class.
We are incredibly proud of the effort, teamwork, creativity, and curiosity shown throughout this topic. Pupils demonstrated excellent research skills, thoughtful presentation, and a genuine interest in the world around them.
Fantastic work, everyone! Keep up the brilliant learning and enthusiasm.
